A recent incident at an Eastern Market tailgating site after a Detroit Lions game resulted in the death of two individuals but the shooter will not face charges as authorities determined he acted in self-defense. The tragedy took place on Sunday, following the Lions’ game against Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Wayne County prosecutor Kym Worthy expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives at what should have been a joyous event. The shooter, a 40-year-old man with a concealed pistol license, fired a single shot after feeling threatened by 25-year-old Jalen Welch, who had brandished a firearm during a dispute at the market.
The shot fired by the shooter struck Welch in the head, and tragically, the same bullet also hit and killed 40-year-old Rayshawn Palmer, who was attempting to mediate the conflict. Initially, there were reports indicating that the shooter fired twice, but further investigation clarified that only one shot was discharged in the incident.
Despite the unfortunate outcome, Worthy emphasized that after considering all relevant laws, there was no viable charge that could be brought against the shooter with substantial evidence to prove guilt. The prosecutor recognized the unpredictability of such situations and noted that anyone could have found themselves in a similarly perilous circumstance.
The incident occurred in the vicinity of Ford Field where the Lions had just been defeated by the Buccaneers with a score of 20-16.
