In Mexico City, a tragic incident occurred as heavy rains triggered a landslide that resulted in the loss of six lives, according to officials.
The landslide occurred on Monday night in Naucalpan, a community located northwest of Mexico City, impacting a house and a school, as reported by the State of Mexico government. The victims, comprising four men and two women, lost their lives in the disaster. Additionally, three individuals sustained injuries and were promptly taken to a state hospital for medical treatment.
Following the calamity, State Governor Delfina Gómez promptly authorized the mobilization of rescue teams and security forces to offer assistance to affected families.
The recent fatalities in Naucalpan come on the heels of another tragic incident where a landslide claimed the lives of nine individuals on Saturday in Jilotzingo, located west of Mexico City within the State of Mexico. Among the deceased was a 3-month-old infant. Fortunately, two children aged 10 and 12, alongside a 34-year-old woman, were rescued. Multiple residences were impacted, prompting authorities to evacuate over 100 individuals due to the looming threat of additional landslides.
The State of Mexico has been beleaguered by landslides and relentless heavy rainfall since the onset of the rainy season in late July. Noteworthy cities such as Chalco have also been grappling with severe downpours, resulting in a confluence of unregulated urban expansion and deteriorating infrastructure, leading to the inundation of streets, residences, and commercial establishments by sewage-contaminated waters.
