The World Food Program revealed that an Israeli airstrike in Gaza last month destroyed the top floor of a guest house where international staff were staying. The agency’s director expressed concerns about the dangerous situation aid workers face while trying to provide food to the Palestinian population. The incident took place on August 31 in the Nuseirat refugee camp, shortly after the WFP had temporarily suspended aid deliveries to northern Gaza due to security threats.
The director of the World Food Program stated that the situation was already risky before but has become even more perilous now. The Israeli Defense Force is in communication with the WFP regarding the airstrike on the guest house where 11 U.N. employees, including 10 WFP staff, were residing. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and the staff have been evacuated to Jordan.
Despite the challenges, the WFP remains dedicated to its mission in Gaza. However, the agency is evaluating the risks of continuing operations in the region. The director emphasized the complications of operating in a designated deconflicted zone that was meant to be safe for humanitarian workers. She raised concerns about Israeli forces targeting areas believed to be safe for refugees and humanitarian operations.
The director of the World Food Program called for a cease-fire from the Israeli Prime Minister to ensure the safety of aid workers and the Palestinian population they serve. She highlighted the essential need for food, water, and sanitation in the region. The Israeli army has not provided immediate comments on the situation.
