KYIV, Ukraine – The city of Pokrovsk in eastern Ukraine is facing critical challenges as it lacks a drinking water supply and natural gas for cooking and heating due to the ongoing conflict with the Russian army. The water filtration station in Pokrovsk was damaged in recent fighting, leaving the city dependent on over 300 hastily drilled water wells for drinking water, according to Donetsk regional Gov. Vadym Filashkin. Additionally, a natural gas distribution station near Pokrovsk was destroyed by Russian forces, impacting the lives of the city’s 18,000 residents, including 522 children. Over the past six weeks, more than 20,000 people have been forced to leave their homes as the conflict escalates, with Russian troops advancing closer to residential areas.
Pokrovsk is a significant defensive stronghold and a key logistics hub in the Donetsk region, crucial for Ukraine’s defense and supply routes. Its capture would pose a serious threat to Ukraine’s defensive capabilities and bring Russia closer to achieving its goal of controlling the entire Donetsk region, which is partially occupied by Russian forces. Despite the relentless attacks by Russian troops using artillery and powerful bombs, Ukrainian forces have continued to hold their ground, with some daring counterattacks, including an incursion into Russia’s Kursk region in an attempt to divert Russian troops from Donetsk.
Russia’s relentless missile and drone attacks on Ukraine, particularly targeting critical infrastructure like the power grid, have worsened the humanitarian situation and raised concerns about a harsh winter for Ukrainians. The United States and Britain have committed nearly $1.5 billion in additional aid to Ukraine, with a focus on restoring the electricity supply. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken criticized Russia for targeting Ukrainian energy systems to harm civilians, emphasizing the need for international support to counter these destructive tactics.
In a recent drone attack on Konotop in Ukraine’s Sumy region, the electricity supply was severely affected, causing extensive damage to the town’s infrastructure. The airstrikes also caused significant destruction, including damage to tram tracks and a large number of windows blown out in buildings. The conflict escalated further as Ukraine’s air force reported that Russia launched 64 Shahed drones and fired five missiles across multiple regions in Ukraine, intensifying the aerial assaults.
Amid escalating tensions, Ukrainian Military Intelligence claimed to have shot down a Russian Su-30SM jet over the Black Sea using a portable surface-to-air missile.
