Blue Jays defeat Mets 6-2 with Bassitt striking out 8 and Schneider contributing 2 RBIs against former team

Davis Schneider’s two-run triple and Chris Bassitt’s strong pitching performance led the Toronto Blue Jays to a 6-2 victory over the New York Mets on Tuesday night. The Mets, who have been on a hot streak, suffered only their second loss in 12 games and are now tied with Atlanta for the final National League wild card spot.

Ernie Clement scored three runs and Leo Jiménez contributed by reaching base three times and driving in a run, helping the Blue Jays secure their second win in eight September games. Bassitt, now 10-13, was dominant on the mound, allowing just one run and five hits over six innings. This was his second career victory against the Mets, his former team in 2022.

The left-hander Brendon Little and right-hander Zach Pop took care of the pitching duties in the seventh inning, and Génesis Cabrera and Chad Green closed out the game for Toronto. Mets’ left-hander David Peterson (9-2) struggled, giving up five runs, four earned, and eight hits in 4 1/3 innings.

Toronto rallied after falling behind 1-0 in the first inning, with Alejandro Kirk, Davis Schneider, and Joey Loperfido delivering key hits in a four-run third inning. The Mets failed to generate much offense after the first inning, managing only three hits for the rest of the game.

In the seventh inning, Mets’ Jose Iglesias scored on a passed ball, but Spencer Horwitz responded for the Blue Jays with an RBI double in the bottom half. On the injury front, Mets’ RHP Paul Blackburn is out with a sore lower back, while Blue Jays’ SS Bo Bichette made a rehab appearance with Triple-A Buffalo.

The series will conclude on Wednesday with RHP Bowden Francis starting for the Blue Jays and LHP Sean Manaea taking the mound for the Mets.
