Bhayshul Tuten’s impressive performance led Virginia Tech to a 31-14 victory over Marshall as he rushed for 120 yards and a touchdown. The Hokies started slowly, holding a narrow 10-7 lead at halftime, but they dominated the second half by scoring touchdowns on their first three possessions after the break.
Tuten’s one-yard touchdown run in the second half’s opening drive extended Virginia Tech’s lead to 17-7. Although Marshall responded with a touchdown pass from Stone Earle to Christian Fitzpatrick, the Hokies pulled away with Kyron Drones running for a touchdown and throwing a touchdown pass to Da’Quan Felton.
Tuten’s performance marked his fifth 100-yard rushing game as a Hokie and the 15th of his career. Virginia Tech totaled 208 rushing yards, contrasting Marshall’s 278 yards after their 549-yard performance in the season opener against Stony Brook.
Marshall struggled offensively, with Stone Earle completing just 13 of 36 passes for 129 yards. The team will need significant improvement on offense to face No. 2 Ohio State in two weeks. On the other hand, Virginia Tech’s defense bounced back by sacking Earle twice, intercepting him once, and limiting Marshall to 5 of 17 on third downs.
In upcoming games, Marshall will play at No. 2 Ohio State on September 21, while Virginia Tech is set to face Old Dominion on Saturday.
