Jonathan Kim secured a last-second 37-yard field goal to grant Michigan State a 27-24 triumph over Maryland in the Big Ten opener for both teams. Aidan Chiles, Michigan State’s quarterback and former Oregon State transfer, had a mixed performance with 363 passing yards, three touchdowns, and three interceptions, ultimately contributing to the Spartans’ victory.
Michigan State, with a 2-0 standing, showcased dominance on offense, outgaining Maryland 493-339. Maryland’s Billy Edwards Jr. threw a crucial 28-yard touchdown pass to Dylan Wade, giving Maryland a brief 24-17 lead in the fourth quarter. However, Michigan State quickly responded with a 77-yard touchdown pass from Chiles to Nick Marsh, tying the game at 24-24 with 4:11 left.
Edwards threw for 253 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception, marking his first loss in five starts since last season. Receiver Tai Felton caught 11 passes for 154 yards and a touchdown, becoming the first Maryland player since 1995 to achieve over 150 yards in consecutive games. Meanwhile, Nick Marsh of Michigan State recorded eight receptions for 194 yards, including the tying touchdown.
Maryland, now 1-1, struggled with their running game, amassing only 86 yards on 31 carries. Looking ahead, Michigan State aims to build on their offensive performance under the guidance of new coach Jonathan Smith, offensive coordinator Brian Lindgren, and their quartet of fresh offensive line starters.
Maryland, on the other hand, displayed defensive vulnerabilities against Michigan State, particularly in defending against big plays downfield. While the Terrapins excel in forcing turnovers, they face challenges due to costly penalties that extend opponent drives.
Next, Michigan will face Prairie View A&M at home, while Maryland travels to face former ACC competitor Virginia in a prime-time matchup.
