SALT LAKE CITY – Cam Rising threw two touchdowns for 92 yards before leaving the game due to a hand injury, as No. 11 Utah defeated Baylor 23-12 on Saturday. Rising was injured in the second quarter after being shoved into the water coolers on the Baylor sideline. Micah Bernard rushed for 118 yards for Utah (2-0) while Dequan Finn struggled against Utah’s defense, throwing for 115 yards and a touchdown for Baylor (1-1).
Isaac Wilson took over as the Utes’ quarterback after Rising’s injury for the second consecutive game. Utah dominated play on both sides of the ball in the first half. They scored their first touchdown with a 28-yard reverse pass from Rising to Money Parks and extended their lead to 14-0 with a 2-yard catch by Bernard. Utah’s Tao Johnson scored a touchdown off a blocked 50-yard field goal attempt, increasing their lead to 23-0 in the second quarter.
Baylor had a challenging start on offense and struggled to recover throughout the game. They did not gain a first down until midway through the second quarter and had a total of 48 yards by halftime. Utah’s victory may see them move into the top 10 in the upcoming AP Poll on Sunday. Baylor will host Air Force next Saturday, while Utah will play against Utah State on the same day.
