A 14-year-old student in Georgia has been charged as an adult for using an assault-style rifle to fatally shoot two students and two teachers outside his algebra classroom at Apalachee High School in Winder, GA. This tragic incident adds to the growing list of school shootings in the U.S., including those in Newtown, CT; Parkland, FL; and Uvalde, TX.
The victims of the shooting have been identified as 14-year-old students Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo, as well as math teacher Christina Irimie, 53. Richard Aspinwall, 39, who taught math and was the defensive coordinator for the high school football team, was also killed. Colleagues and students mourned the loss of Aspinwall, describing him as a dedicated and respected educator and coach.
Mike Hancock, the head coach at Apalachee High School, praised Aspinwall for his hard work and commitment to his students and the football team. Former football player Jay Garcia, now a junior at the school, attended a prayer vigil to honor the memory of the coach and teacher who had a significant impact on his life.
Garcia reflected on the loss, acknowledging that some people will not be present the next day but emphasizing the importance of cherishing the memories and impact of those who have passed away. The community and school are grappling with the aftermath of this devastating event as they come together to remember and honor the lives lost in the shooting.
