Belgian cyclist Wout van Aert is recovering from a crash during the Spanish Vuelta without any fractures but with a significant knee injury that requires intensive care, according to his team’s statement on Wednesday. Van Aert, a three-time stage winner, had to withdraw from the race earlier wearing the green jersey as the top sprinter and leading the mountains standings. The incident occurred during stage 16 when he, along with two other riders, crashed about 50 kilometers from the finish line.
After being taken to the hospital, his team, Visma–Lease a Bike, disclosed that van Aert suffered severe knee pain due to a deep wound that demands specialized care. Despite his earlier stage wins, van Aert decided to travel back to Belgium to further his recovery.
Meanwhile, the overall Vuelta leader, Ben O’Connor, held a five-second advantage over three-time Vuelta champion Primoz Roglic as they approached Stage 17. The stage was set to cover a 141.5-kilometer journey from Arnuero to Santander, featuring a predominantly flat finish.
The development in van Aert’s health and the intensifying competition among the Vuelta leaders marked the latest events in the cycling competition.
