Japanese Prime Minister Kishida to visit South Korea for summit to enhance relations

The Prime Minister of Japan is scheduled to visit South Korea on Friday for what is likely to be the final summit between the two leaders, announced South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol’s office on Tuesday. Outgoing Prime Minister Fumio Kishida’s two-day visit was planned as he expressed a desire to conclude his term on a positive note regarding bilateral relations. This upcoming summit will mark the 12th meeting between the two leaders, with discussions expected to focus on enhancing their countries’ relationship and collaborating on regional and global issues.

Earlier in the year, a string of losses in local elections prompted a call for change within Japan’s ruling party, which was further compounded by a fundraising scandal. Kishida declared his intention to step down in August following the selection of a new leader by the Liberal Democratic Party on September 27. Yoon’s office mentioned that Prime Minister Kishida is anticipated to offer useful advice to his successor regarding foreign policies and the future of South Korea-Japan relations based on his experience.

Since assuming office in 2022, President Yoon has placed importance on settling historical disputes with Japan as part of broader efforts to strengthen South Korea’s military alliance with the United States. Both nations have bolstered their military and diplomatic collaboration in response to nuclear threats from North Korea.
