A tragic incident unfolded in Troy, New Hampshire, where a family of three recently moved into a duplex. The father, identified as Trent Weston, fatally shot his wife, Brittany, and their 8-year-old son, Benson, in a violent outburst. Police revealed that both mother and son succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds inflicted by Trent, who was subsequently shot multiple times by troopers. The chaos escalated into a standoff on the Piscataqua Bridge, connecting New Hampshire and Maine, where the father was shot by law enforcement and fell 100 feet into the water below.
The authorities shared that the grim sequence of events commenced when police found Brittany Weston’s body at the family’s residence after Trent contacted 911 to report her death following an argument. The episode culminated on the Interstate 95 bridge between Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and Kittery, Maine, with Trent Weston parking his car on the bridge before being confronted by troopers.
During the confrontation, two New Hampshire troopers and a Maine trooper resorted to firing their weapons as Trent raised his gun after exiting his vehicle. Despite prior failed attempts to negotiate with him, law enforcement officials had to resort to lethal force to protect themselves and others.
Following the altercation on the bridge, the Coast Guard retrieved Trent Weston’s body from the Piscataqua River. Reports from the Portland Press Herald suggested that Trent had thrown a box off the bridge before being shot, although state police declined to comment on this detail.
The closure of the Piscataqua Bridge for approximately seven hours ensued after the incident, disrupting the daily commute of around 70,000 to 80,000 vehicles that traverse the bridge, as indicated by the Maine Department of Transportation.
