NHL player Johnny Gaudreau from the Columbus Blue Jackets tragically passed away at the age of 31 after being struck by a car while riding his bicycle in New Jersey on Thursday evening. New Jersey State Police confirmed that Gaudreau and his younger brother, Matthew, 29, were both hit by a car in Salem County, New Jersey. The Gaudreau brothers, who were natives of Carneys Point, New Jersey, were in town for their sister Katie’s wedding, set to take place in Philadelphia the following day.
Authorities reported that the Gaudreau brothers were cycling along a road when a driver behind them attempted to overtake two other vehicles and ended up hitting them from the rear. Tragically, both brothers were pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. The driver, identified as Sean M. Higgins, was allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident. Higgins has been charged with two counts of death by auto and is currently in custody.
Johnny Gaudreau, also known as “Johnny Hockey,” had a successful career in the NHL, having played 11 professional seasons and was preparing for his third season with the Columbus Blue Jackets.
