Louis Rees-Zammit, a Welsh rugby player, signs with the Jacksonville Jaguars in the NFL

Welsh rugby player Louis Rees-Zammit has officially joined the Jacksonville Jaguars in the NFL. He arrived at the team’s facility on Thursday, signed a contract to be part of the practice squad, and was set to join his teammates on the field shortly after.

Rees-Zammit’s move to Jacksonville opens up the opportunity for him to potentially play in London during two NFL games in October. The Jaguars are scheduled to play against the Chicago Bears at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on October 13 and then face the New England Patriots at Wembley Stadium on October 20.

Initially signed with the Kansas City Chiefs in March through the NFL’s International Player Pathway Program, the running back/receiver Rees-Zammit was released after the preseason. Landing in Jacksonville, he fills in the spot left vacant by tight end Patrick Murtagh, who suffered a season-ending injury during training camp.

Rees-Zammit, known as one of the top wingers in rugby, had announced his departure from the Welsh national team earlier in the year to pursue his dream of playing in the NFL. He was part of a group of 15 athletes from eight different countries who participated in the NFL’s international program, undergoing intensive training at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida.

During the international players’ showcase at the University of South Florida’s pro day, Rees-Zammit impressed with an official 40-yard dash time of 4.43 seconds, garnering attention from numerous scouts. International players like Rees-Zammit provide NFL teams with an additional roster spot on their practice squads, further promoting global talent in American football.
