Kyle Freeland pitched six innings, and the Rockies capitalized on four errors by the Marlins to secure an 8-2 victory on Wednesday night. Aaron Schunk hit his first major league home run, while Nolan Jones contributed with two RBI singles, and Drew Romo added two hits and an RBI for Colorado. Ezequiel Tovar also contributed a two-run double in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Derek Hill homered for Miami, who has now fallen to a record of 6-15 in their last 21 games. Freeland, in his 200th career appearance, allowed two runs on six hits, struck out five, and walked one. He achieved his 59th career win, surpassing Jason Jennings for the fifth most wins in club history.
The game was tied at 2-all going into the bottom of the fifth when Schunk hit a home run off Max Meyer. The Rockies added three more runs in the sixth inning, benefiting from one of the Marlins’ errors. Jones hit his second RBI single in the inning and later scored when the shortstop’s errant throw allowed him to reach home. Meyer pitched five-plus innings, giving up five hits and five runs, three of which were earned.
The Marlins made roster moves, including optioning RHP Roddery Muñoz and LHP Jonathan Bermúdez to Triple-A Jacksonville. Meanwhile, RHP Xzavion Curry and LHP Austin Kitchen were recalled from Jacksonville. In addition, Baltimore claimed OF Forrest Wall off waivers from Miami.
In the upcoming series finale, Marlins RHP Valente Bellozo is set to make his eighth career start, while the Rockies will have Bradley Blaylock on the mound, who secured his first career win in his last appearance against the New York Yankees.
