Defending U.S. Open champion Novak Djokovic advanced to the tournament’s third round after his opponent, Laslo Djere, retired due to injury during their match. Djokovic was leading 6-4, 6-4, 2-0 when Djere, his fellow Serbian player, had to stop playing. Djere had been experiencing discomfort near his hip and received on-court medical attention during the second set, in which he was ahead 4-2.
This victory marked Djokovic’s 90th win at the U.S. Open and means he has reached this impressive milestone at all four Grand Slam tournaments. The 24-time major champion is now set to face No. 28 seed Alexei Popyrin in the next round on Friday.
