In a tragic incident at a Delta Air Lines maintenance facility near the Atlanta airport, a worker lost his life in a tire explosion. The body of Mirko Marweg, 58, was so severely damaged that his family had to identify him through tattoos and a lanyard. Another worker, Luis Aldarondo, 37, also lost his life in the same accident, while a third worker sustained serious injuries.
Marweg’s son, Andre Coleman, shared with Atlanta’s 11Alive news station that despite wanting confirmation of his father’s death, the medical examiner informed the family that the body was unrecognizable. Ultimately, a Mississippi State lanyard that Marweg was wearing helped confirm his identity.
Marweg, a resident of Stone Mountain, Georgia, had dedicated over 20 years to Delta and was looking forward to retiring in a few months. Described as a caring individual, Marweg had even assisted his son with motorcycle maintenance just two days before the tragic incident.
The injured worker is currently receiving medical attention while the cause of the explosion remains unknown, with the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration launching an investigation. Delta clarified that the wheel components involved in the explosion were not connected to an aircraft at the time.
The facility where the incident occurred is part of Delta TechOps, responsible for maintenance and repair services for Delta Air Lines and numerous aviation clients worldwide.
