Switzerland’s Fabian Schär, 32, retires from international play to prioritize playing for Newcastle

Switzerland’s national team defender Fabian Schär announced his retirement from international football on Monday, joining the ranks of two other veteran players from the squad who have also opted to focus on their club careers. This decision came as a surprise as Switzerland heads into the European Championship quarterfinals.

Schär, along with goalkeeper Yann Sommer and playmaker Xherdan Shaqiri, have collectively played over 300 games for Switzerland, notably starting their senior international careers while playing for Basel. The 32-year-old Schär shared in a statement released by the Swiss soccer federation that he will be directing his attention towards playing for his club team Newcastle in the Premier League.

Having represented Switzerland for more than a decade and earning 86 caps, Schär expressed his gratitude, stating, “After more than 10 years and 86 matches with Switzerland, the moment has come to say my goodbyes.” Throughout his tenure, he managed to score eight goals for the national team.

Schär’s final appearance for Switzerland was in the Euro 2024 match against England, where Switzerland faced elimination in a penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw. He successfully converted his spot kick during the shootout, but England secured victory with an 80th-minute equalizer from Bukayo Saka.

The national team, under the guidance of coach Murat Yakin, will miss the experience and contributions of Schär, Sommer, and Shaqiri as they gear up to resume playing next week in the UEFA Nations League, facing challenges against Denmark and Spain. Yakin extended his appreciation to Schär, acknowledging his dedication and performances for the country during his time with the team.
