Denmark appoints Augsburg’s Lars Knudsen as interim coach

In Denmark, Lars Knudsen, the assistant coach at Augsburg, has been appointed as the temporary head coach of the Danish national team for their upcoming Nations League matches against Switzerland and Serbia. This decision comes after the Danish Football Union revealed that interim coach Morten Wieghorst, a former Denmark international, is currently on sick leave due to “minor stress symptoms.” Wieghorst had been serving as the interim coach following Kasper Hjulmand’s resignation after the European Championship, where Denmark had a performance of drawing all three group games and then losing to Germany in the round of 16.

Knudsen, aged 47, who previously worked as a set piece coach for the United States men’s national team, joined Augsburg in January and will now lead the Danish national team in the upcoming matches. The matches are set to take place on September 5 against Switzerland and three days later against Serbia, both to be held in Copenhagen.

Peter Møller, the director of football for Denmark, acknowledged the unique circumstance as he described it as a “special situation” and commented on the unfortunate timing of Wieghorst’s absence due to health reasons.

It is an unexpected change for the Danish national team as they prepare for these important Nations League fixtures under the leadership of Lars Knudsen in the absence of Morten Wieghorst.
