In the Patriots’ final preseason matchup, rookie quarterback Drake Maye showcased his ability by completing 13 of 20 passes for 126 yards and a touchdown against the Washington Commanders, despite a 20-10 loss. Maye, in competition with Jacoby Brissett for the starting job, delivered a solid performance that impressed observers.
Brissett, the initial starter for the Patriots, was unfortunately sacked hard by Washington’s defensive lineman K.J. Henry early in the game, leading to a right shoulder injury and his early exit from the field.
Maye, taking over for Brissett, connected with Kevin Harris for an 18-yard touchdown pass in the first half. However, Maye faced challenges as the Patriots committed multiple penalties due to issues with false starts, holding, and illegal formations.
The Commanders emerged victorious despite not playing their starting lineup, with Jayden Daniels among the 34 players who sat out the game. Quarterback Martavis Bryant’s late touchdown catch secured the win for Washington.
On the defensive side, the Commanders face tough decisions at the defensive tackle position following standout performances by Phidarian Mathis and John Ridgeway against the Patriots.
In the kicking game, New England’s Joey Slye attempted long field goals, including a 64-yarder that fell short, while Washington’s Cade York, acquired in a recent trade, made successful kicks from 34 and 33 yards.
Looking ahead, the Patriots will begin their regular season against Cincinnati on September 8th, while the Commanders will open against Tampa Bay on the same day.
