Baker Mayfield showcased his skills in the preseason finale against the Miami Dolphins, helping the Tampa Bay Buccaneers secure a 24-14 victory. Mayfield quickly impressed by leading a 70-yard drive on the opening series, culminating in a touchdown run by Rachaad White after a 28-yard pass to rookie Jalen McMillan.
Mayfield, who sat out the first two preseason games, completed all three of his passes for 54 yards before taking a break for the rest of the game. On the Dolphins’ side, Tua Tagovailoa also played one series, completing all five of his passes for 51 yards and a touchdown.
Both quarterbacks focused on giving young players a chance to compete for roster spots throughout the game. Mayfield, coming off a successful season and a new $100 million contract, showcased his abilities before handing over the reins to backup Kyle Trask.
Miami’s receivers, Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle, missed the preseason finale due to injuries sustained earlier in the week during joint practices with the Buccaneers. In the game, Mike White and Skylar Thompson split time at quarterback for the Dolphins, while Thompson impressed with two touchdown passes.
Injuries were a concern during the game as Miami receiver Anthony Schwartz had to be assisted off the field in the second quarter with a potential left knee injury. Looking ahead, the Dolphins will open their regular season at home against the Jacksonville Jaguars, while the Buccaneers will host rookie Jayden Daniels and the Washington Commanders in their upcoming games.
