Italian rescuers completed the retrieval of the final seven bodies from a luxury yacht that sank off the Sicilian coast, according to the Coast Guard. Among the deceased is believed to be Hannah Lynch, the daughter of British tech mogul Mike Lynch, who also tragically lost his life in the boat’s sinking earlier in the week. The yacht, named The Bayesian, was a 56-meter (184-foot) British-flagged vessel that went down during a storm on Monday, leaving Hannah Lynch as the last person unaccounted for onboard.
The body of Mike Lynch, who had recently been acquitted of fraud charges, was found on Thursday. He was celebrating his acquittal with his family and legal team on the yacht. The family of the Lynchs, devastated by the loss, expressed gratitude for the support received during this difficult time. Mike Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, was one of the 15 survivors rescued from the yacht.
Rescuers faced challenges in recovering the bodies, requiring four days to locate all the missing individuals within the wreck resting 50 meters (164 feet) below the sea surface. Authorities suspect the yacht was hit by a waterspout, a type of tornado over water, resulting in its rapid sinking. Apart from the Lynch family, the other victims included Christopher Morvillo and his wife Neda, Jonathan Bloomer and his wife Judy, and Recaldo Thomas, the chef of the yacht.
The Termini Imerese Public Prosecutor’s Office plans to hold a news briefing to announce initial findings from its investigation into the incident, which commenced immediately following the tragedy. One of the central inquiries focuses on how a supposedly “unsinkable” vessel, as described by its manufacturer Perini Navi, sank while a nearby sailboat encountered minimal damage.
