In Santaquin, Utah, a tragic incident occurred where a 5-year-old boy lost his life after accidentally shooting himself with a handgun on Thursday. Lt. Mike Wall from the Santaquin Police Department shared with KSL-TV that the boy discovered a 9 mm handgun in the back room of his house and discharged a single shot. Despite his family being at home during the incident, they were not in the room with him at the time. Despite their efforts to revive him until emergency services arrived, the boy passed away on the scene. Authorities have ruled out foul play and are investigating how the child accessed the firearm.
Further details have not been disclosed at this time, and a representative from the police department did not respond immediately to inquiries made by The Associated Press on Thursday evening. Santaquin is located approximately 60 miles (96 kilometers) south of Salt Lake City.
