Thierry Henry, who led France’s Olympic team to a silver medal at the recent Paris Games, has stepped down from his coaching role, citing personal reasons as reported by the French soccer federation on Monday. Despite having a contract extending through the next season, Henry was expected to resume coaching the France under-21 team for the 2025 European Championship qualifiers next month.
Philippe Diallo, the federation president, commended Henry’s professionalism, dedication, and passion for the national team jersey, expressing gratitude for his contributions.
Henry, a former star for France, Arsenal, and Barcelona, took on the coaching position one year ago, focusing on the Paris Olympics campaign. The team reached the final on Aug. 9, ultimately losing 5-3 to Spain in extra time at Parc des Princes.
Following the Olympic final, Henry gave a vague response about his future plans, hinting that he might not continue with the U21 team. In a statement released on Monday, Henry expressed immense pride in securing the silver medal for his country at the Olympic Games as one of the greatest accomplishments of his life.
