Rennes clinched a 3-0 win against Lyon in the French league on Sunday. Benjamin Bourigeaud scored the first goal in the 19th minute with a deflected free kick, followed quickly by Amine Gouiri doubling the lead after a swift counterattack. Newcomer Henrik Meister, a Danish striker, sealed the victory with a stoppage-time goal to complete Rennes’ dominant performance.
Despite significant spending in the transfer window, Lyon, who struggled last season, got off to a poor start in the new campaign. Forward Georges Mikautadze missed a penalty, and Lyon central defender Moussa Niakhaté, a multi-million euro signing, was at fault for two of the three goals conceded by Lyon.
In other games, Auxerre marked its return to Ligue 1 with a 2-1 win over Nice, with Rayan Raveloson helping to equalize after Mohamed-Ali Cho had put Nice ahead. Lens defeated Angers 1-0 with Wesley Saïd scoring the winning goal in the first half under the guidance of new coach Will Still.
Toulouse and Nantes played to a goalless draw, while Montpellier and Strasbourg settled for a 1-1 draw in their match.
