Newcomer Henrik Meister, a Danish striker, sealed the victory with a stoppage-time goal to complete Rennes’ dominant performance.

Despite significant spending in the transfer window, Lyon, who struggled last season, got off to a poor start in the new campaign. Forward Georges Mikautadze missed a penalty, and Lyon central defender Moussa Niakhaté, a multi-million euro signing, was at fault for two of the three goals conceded by Lyon.
