Every Monday night, the basement of the Andrew and Walter Young Family YMCA transforms into a safe space for Black men in the Atlanta area. The Black Man Lab has been meeting for nearly ten years, providing a sanctuary for over 100 men to gather, pray, meditate, share experiences, and learn from each other. This weekly gathering serves as a platform for these men to address challenges and victories they encounter in their lives.
One recent meeting held significance as attendees discussed the potential for a Black woman to win the presidency following Vice President Kamala Harris’ candidacy. The discussion also emphasized the increasing focus on the role of Black men in the upcoming election. Traditionally, Black male voters have leaned towards the Democratic Party, but both major political parties are now aiming to engage younger Black men, seeing them as crucial voters in the upcoming election.
Issues such as civil rights, economic mobility, wealth creation, entrepreneurship, police reform, and workplace anti-discrimination policies are at the forefront for many Black male voters. The Black Man Lab event serves as a platform for men of all ages to share their perspectives, ranging from 8 to 86 years old, highlighting the unique challenges each generation faces as Black men in America.
The entrance of Kamala Harris into the presidential race has energized Black male allies, leading to increased engagement and fundraising efforts within the community. The campaign efforts aim to address skepticism among Black men towards the political system and concerns about electing a woman to the highest office. Both the Democratic and Republican parties are intensifying their outreach to Black men, recognizing the potential impact this demographic could have in the upcoming election.
