In a preseason game on Saturday, the Kansas City Chiefs faced the Detroit Lions, resulting in a 24-23 victory for the Lions. Despite the loss, Chiefs’ quarterback Patrick Mahomes stood out with a remarkable behind-the-back pass to Travis Kelce. Mahomes completed eight of his 14 passes for 93 yards in just two series of play, guiding the Chiefs to a couple of field goals against the Lions’ backup defense.
The highlight of the game was Mahomes’ unconventional pass as he was under pressure from a Detroit defensive player. Mahomes swiftly threw the ball behind his back to Kelce, who was able to secure the catch and gain a first down, leading to a successful field goal attempt. Despite stating that Kelce ran the wrong route on the play, Mahomes admitted on TV that he threw the pass “out of spite.”
Following Mahomes, Carson Wentz entered the game, completing five of his ten passes for 31 yards and throwing a touchdown to Xavier Worthy. The Lions’ head coach, Dan Campbell, decided to rest the team’s starters for the second preseason game, as he did the previous year, due to injuries sustained in training camp.
In terms of the Lions’ performances, Nate Sudfeld completed 14 of his 27 passes for 196 yards with a touchdown and an interception, competing for the backup quarterback position behind starter Jared Goff. Meanwhile, Hendon Hooker, returning from a concussion, was 12 of 15 for 150 yards and rushed for a touchdown.
The game also had its share of fumbles and missed opportunities from the Lions’ special teams, including a fumbled kickoff return, a fumbled punt return, and a missed extra point by Bates.
Injuries during the game were limited to Chiefs’ LS James Winchester, who left in the first half with a shoulder injury but fortunately returned after halftime. Looking ahead, the Lions are scheduled to play the Steelers next Saturday, while the Chiefs will face the Bears on Thursday night.
