The Colorado Rockies have decided to part ways with catcher Elías Díaz, who has been with the team for nearly five years, by giving him his unconditional release. This move comes shortly after Díaz was placed on waivers by the team. In line with their ongoing youth movement, the Rockies have opted to bring up rookie Drew Romo from Triple A Albuquerque. Romo, a switch-hitting catcher and MLB.com’s ninth-ranked prospect, was hitting .297 with 14 home runs, 60 RBIs, and three stolen bases in 85 games for Albuquerque. The 22-year-old Romo, who was the 35th overall pick in the 2020 draft, is expected to make his major league debut starting Saturday night’s game against the San Diego Padres.
Elías Díaz, who is 33 years old, had spent part of his ten-year Major League career with the Pittsburgh Pirates before joining the Colorado team as a free agent in January 2020. In this season, he had a batting average of .270 with five home runs and 36 RBIs in 84 games. Despite his contributions to the team, which include being well-liked by teammates and respected for his leadership and game-calling skills, Díaz was let go due to the organization’s decision to focus on younger players. Díaz notably hit a home run in the previous season’s All-Star Game, earning him the MVP award, a first for a Rockies player.
Rockies manager Bud Black acknowledged that the decision to part ways with Díaz was not easy, as he had been an integral part of the team for four years. Black emphasized the team’s strategy of transitioning to a younger roster and providing opportunities for emerging talent. As part of other roster adjustments, the Rockies reinstated left-handed pitcher Lucas Gilbreath from the 60-day injured list after his recovery from left elbow surgery and sent right-handed pitcher Riley Pint to Albuquerque. This roster shuffle reflects the team’s commitment to evolving and integrating young players into their lineup.
