One day after Ethan Fang secured a spot in the U.S. Amateur quarterfinals following a playoff, he emerged victorious in two matches at Hazeltine National on Thursday. Fang, now a sophomore at Oklahoma State, defeated Zach Adam in the morning and then claimed a 2-up win over Bastien Amat of France.
Fang had to battle through a 14-man playoff to secure the last spot for match play with a par on Wednesday morning. He continued his winning streak by triumphing in his first-round match later in the day. Fang is set to face Noah Kent in the quarterfinals, who defeated Garrett Engle 4-and-2, having never played until the 18th hole in any of his three victories.
Among the remaining competitors, Jose Luis Ballester of Spain, ranked 10th in the world amateur ranking, is now the highest-ranked player left in the tournament after the elimination of No. 1 amateur Luke Clanton in the second round. Ballester advanced to the quarterfinals by defeating Christian Brand 2-and-1 in a match that concluded on the 17th hole.
Ballester will next compete against Bobby Massa, who outlasted Ashton McCulloch in a 23-hole match. Another Spaniard, Luis Masaveu, secured his spot in the quarterfinals by beating Phichaksn Maichon of Thailand 3-and-2. Masaveu rallied from being 1 down through 10 holes by winning four of the next five, three of them with birdies.
Masaveu’s next opponent will be Brendan Valdes, who defeated Peter Fountain 3-and-2. Jacob Modleski, having closed out all three matches before the 18th hole, will face Jackson Buchanan in the quarterfinals, with Buchanan securing a victory on the 18th hole over Tyler Mawhinney.
The upcoming rounds of the U.S. Amateur will see the quarterfinals on Friday, followed by the semifinals on Saturday, leading up to the 36-hole championship match on Sunday.
