US prosecutors seek to prosecute Mexican drug lord ‘El Mayo’ Zambada in New York before potentially trying him elsewhere

A request was made by prosecutors on Thursday to transfer the trial of Mexican drug lord Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada from Texas to New York City. Zambada, a prominent figure and co-founder of Mexico’s Sinaloa cartel, was arrested in the U.S. along with a son of the notorious Sinaloa kingpin Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán last month in New Mexico. The 76-year-old Zambada has denied the charges against him, including racketeering conspiracy and drug conspiracy, in U.S. federal court in El Paso, Texas.

Federal prosecutors in Texas are seeking to move Zambada to New York, specifically to the jurisdiction that oversaw the conviction of El Chapo in 2019 on drug and conspiracy charges, resulting in a life sentence. If the transfer is granted, the case in Texas will follow the proceedings in New York. Zambada faces charges in New York relating to operating a criminal enterprise, murder conspiracy, drug offenses, and other criminal activities. However, Zambada’s lawyers have not commented on the matter.

In a separate development, Joaquín Guzmán López, the son of El Chapo, has entered a not guilty plea in a federal court in Chicago on charges of drug trafficking and other related offenses.
