Javier Báez’s two-run homer in the eighth inning led the Detroit Tigers to a 2-1 victory over the Seattle Mariners, completing a three-game sweep. This win came after the Tigers and Mariners faced each other six times in nine days, with Detroit winning two out of three in Seattle last week.
The Mariners received a strong performance from their starter, Bryce Miller, who allowed only one hit over seven innings and struck out nine. Seattle took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning when Tigers opener Alex Faedo issued four walks, including one with the bases loaded to Justin Turner.
In the eighth inning, Parker Meadows walked and stole second base before Báez connected with a 2-1 slider from Andrés Muñoz, sending it over the left-field fence for a home run. This marked Detroit’s fourth consecutive win, with Shelby Miller earning the victory and Jason Foley securing his 16th save.
Kenta Maeda also delivered a solid performance for the Tigers, pitching 5 1/3 scoreless innings of bulk relief. The Tigers will host the New York Yankees in a three-game series before heading to Williamsport, Pa., for the Little League Classic on Sunday night. Meanwhile, the Mariners will travel to Pittsburgh to face the Pirates in a three-game series.
This game showcased strong pitching performances from both teams, with Detroit ultimately coming out on top due to Báez’s timely home run and a solid relief effort from their pitching staff.
