A federal judge in San Juan, Puerto Rico, has put a stop to a lawsuit brought by Bad Bunny’s sports representation firm against the Major League Baseball Players Association. The judge ruled that the case should be resolved through arbitration rather than in court.
Rimas Sports, operating as Diamond Sports LLC, filed the lawsuit in mid-May seeking a restraining order against the players’ union, which would allow them to continue representing their clients. The Players Association successfully argued that the dispute should be settled through arbitration based on the union’s regulations.
Judge Camille L. Vélez-Rivé issued a 23-page order, stating that there were no factual issues to be resolved by the court and the matter should be handled through arbitration as per the union’s rules. The union had imposed disciplinary measures on Rimas agents William Arroyo, Noah Assad, and Jonathan Miranda in April, resulting in fines and decertification for Arroyo.
Arbitrator Ruth M. Moscovitch is set to oversee an appeal by Arroyo regarding the disciplinary actions. Rimas had contended in federal court that the union overstepped its authority in regulating agents, but the judge ruled that the arbitrator holds the power to determine jurisdiction and handle objections related to the arbitration agreement or regulations.
There has been no immediate response from either the Players Association or Rimas to the ruling.
