Howard emerges as starting quarterback for Ohio State, Brown remains backup

Will Howard has emerged as the starting quarterback for Ohio State ahead of Devin Brown, announced coach Ryan Day. Howard, who transferred from Kansas State after starting 28 games in four seasons, outperformed Brown in nearly 30 spring and preseason practices to secure the starting position. Despite Brown being named the backup, other quarterbacks like Lincoln Kienholz, Julian Sayin, and Air Noland will have the chance to compete for the top backup spot.

Day expressed his excitement about Howard leading the team, praising his command of the offense, experience, and improved physical condition, making him a dual-threat with his legs and arm. Howard’s successful tenure at Kansas State included winning the 2022 Big 12 championship, setting the school’s career touchdown pass record, and matching the single-season touchdown pass record.

After a strong summer following a mixed spring performance, Howard arrived at preseason practice displaying a better grasp of coordinator Chip Kelly’s offensive system, resulting in improved speed and decision-making on the field. Despite Brown’s versatility, Day noted that consistency and ball security are areas he needs to focus on to contribute effectively.

This marks the second consecutive year that Brown has been edged out for the starting position after losing to Kyle McCord last season, who later transferred to Syracuse. Day emphasized that Brown has the potential to contribute significantly if he can enhance his consistency and ball security moving forward.
