Hiba Jelahej, a resident of Chandler, Arizona, experienced a series of fainting spells last summer, leading to her being rushed to the emergency room. After undergoing various tests, doctors diagnosed her with an extremely rare heart condition known as a quadricuspid aortic valve (QAV). This condition, affecting less than 0.05% of the global population, involves having four cusps in the aortic valve, causing disruptions in blood flow.
To address the issues related to her QAV diagnosis, Jelahej underwent five different heart procedures, including the insertion of a mechanical valve and a pacemaker to regulate her heartbeat. Despite facing complications and setbacks during her recovery, Jelahej remained determined to regain her health and return to activities she loved, such as running marathons.
Throughout her challenging journey, Jelahej demonstrated strength, positivity, and a willingness to persevere. Her resilience and unwavering commitment to her goals inspired those around her, including her clinical pharmacist, Melissa Meck. Jelahej’s goal is to continue running and eventually participate in ultra-distance races, showcasing her ability to overcome setbacks and fulfill her dreams.
As she continues her cardiac rehabilitation and gradually increases her running distance, Jelahej remains focused on her aspiration to become an ultra-runner. She believes that her experience serves as a testament to the power of gratitude, faith, perseverance, and dedication to one’s dreams. Despite the current challenges she faces in her recovery, Jelahej remains steadfast in her pursuit of a fulfilling and active life, driven by the belief that every moment is a precious opportunity to embrace life’s journey.
