The Arizona Diamondbacks made a significant roster move by sending Alek Thomas down to Triple-A on Wednesday. The 24-year-old outfielder had been struggling since returning from a left hamstring injury, hitting just .191 with three home runs and 17 RBIs. Thomas, who was a key player in the postseason last year, lost his starting position to Jake McCarthy, who has been on a hot streak recently.
To fill Thomas’ position on the roster, the Diamondbacks recalled Blaze Alexander, an infielder. This move provides extra infield depth, especially with All-Star Ketel Marte dealing with a sprained ankle. Alexander, who spent part of the season on the roster, has a .259 batting average with three home runs and 21 RBIs.
Blaze Alexander started at second base in the game against the Rockies on Wednesday. Thomas, on the other hand, had a standout moment during the team’s World Series run last October when his two-run homer in Game 4 of the NL Championship Series was a turning point in the series against the Phillies.
The Diamondbacks were on a roll entering Wednesday’s game, with five consecutive wins and 17 victories in their last 20 games.
