Michael King pitched a stellar game, going six innings without allowing a run as the San Diego Padres shut out the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-0 on Tuesday. The victory marked the Padres’ 18th win in 21 games since July 20 and extended their winning streak to eight series. Conversely, the loss was the Pirates’ ninth consecutive defeat, making it 11 losses in their last 12 games.
King, who improved his record to 10-6, struck out 10 batters, surrendered seven hits, and did not issue any walks. Pirates’ starter Luis Ortiz (5-3) gave up two runs (one earned) and three hits over five innings. In the first inning, Ortiz escaped a bases-loaded situation, allowing just an unearned run on a sacrifice fly by Manny Machado, bringing in Luis Arraez to give the Padres a 1-0 lead.
David Peralta extended San Diego’s lead in the fifth inning with a solo home run off Ortiz. Machado added another run in the eighth inning with a single that drove in Arraez against Pirates reliever Kyle Nicolas. Despite collecting eight hits, the Pirates failed to capitalize, leaving seven runners stranded.
In the field, Pirates’ Ji Hwan Bae made remarkable defensive plays, including a diving catch to deny Machado in the first inning and a leaping catch to rob Jackson Merrill in the fourth inning. Padres relievers Jason Adam and Tanner Scott held the Pirates scoreless before closer Robert Suarez secured his 27th save with a clean ninth inning.
In roster news, Pirates left-hander Marco Gonzales was moved to the 60-day injured list due to a left forearm strain that previously sidelined him for three months. Right-hander Ryder Ryan replaced Gonzales on the roster after his call-up from Triple-A Indianapolis Indians.
The next game will feature Pirates right-hander Mitch Keller (10-6, 3.56) against Padres left-hander Martin Pérez (2-5, 4.78) in the series finale on Wednesday.
