Vinesh Phogat, the Indian wrestler, is still awaiting a decision on her appeal for a shared silver medal after being disqualified from an Olympic final for missing weight. The Wrestling Federation of India stated that the decision has been postponed for a second time and is now expected on Friday.
The Court of Arbitration for Sport, the highest court in sports, conducted a hearing in Paris last Friday regarding Phogat’s case against United World Wrestling and the International Olympic Committee. The CAS initially planned to announce a decision by the end of the Olympics on Sunday. However, due to “exceptional circumstances,” the CAS granted arbitrator Annabelle Bennett more time, extending the deadline to Tuesday.
The wrestling federation informed that the CAS has delayed the deadline once more, leaving the wrestling-crazy nation of 1.4 billion in anticipation. Phogat was disqualified from the 50-kilogram women’s freestyle class for weighing in 100 grams over the limit last Wednesday, preventing her from competing in an Olympic wrestling final and claiming a medal. She appealed for credit for the three victories she secured after successfully weighing in a day before.
The incident has prompted concerns about the risks associated with weight cutting, particularly as the Olympics feature only six weight classes compared to the ten in other international competitions. Last Thursday, Phogat revealed on social media in Hindi that she intends to retire from the sport, stating, “My courage is broken, I don’t have any more strength now. Goodbye Wrestling, 2001-2024.”
