Blues submit offer sheets to Oilers’ Broberg and Holloway, giving Edmonton 7-day time frame to respond

The St. Louis Blues have made a bold move by issuing offer sheets to Edmonton Oilers defenseman Philip Broberg and forward Dylan Holloway. These offers give the Oilers a week to decide whether to match the contracts offered to their restricted free agents or accept draft picks from St. Louis as compensation.
The offer to Broberg is a two-year deal worth $9.16 million, which would result in a second-round pick going to the Blues if the Oilers choose not to match. Holloway, on the other hand, received a two-year offer of $4.58 million, leading to a third-round draft pick as compensation.
To meet NHL regulations in presenting the offer sheet to Broberg, the Blues also revealed a trade with Pittsburgh to regain their second-round pick in next year’s draft. Additionally, St. Louis included a 2026 fifth-round draft pick in the deal, while sending a 2026 second-round selection and a 2025 third-round pick to the Penguins.
The Oilers have not yet commented on the Blues’ offer sheet. The last time an offer sheet was used was by the Carolina Hurricanes in 2021, when they successfully acquired center Jesperi Kotkaniemi from Montreal after the Canadiens declined to match the offer.
Blues general manager Doug Armstrong is aiming to accelerate the team’s rebuilding process after missing the playoffs for the past two seasons. Meanwhile, the Oilers find themselves projected to be over $354,000 above the salary cap limit following their seven-game loss to Florida in the Stanley Cup Final.
If the Oilers match the offers, it would increase their total by nearly $6.88 million. Teams are required to be under the salary cap by the start of the season. In July, Stan Bowman was hired as the Oilers’ new general manager, replacing Ken Holland whose contract was not renewed.
Broberg, 23, was the eighth overall pick in the 2019 draft. He tallied two assists in 12 regular-season games last year and contributed two goals and an assist in a career-high 10 playoff games. Holloway, 22, was selected 14th overall in the 2020 draft. He recorded six goals and three assists in 38 games last season and added five goals and two assists in 25 playoff games. Overall, he has nine goals and nine assists in 89 regular-season games.
