A 3-year-old girl was injured by a black bear in a tent at a private campground in Montana, near Yellowstone National Park, as shared by state wildlife officials. The incident occurred around 10 p.m. on Sunday at a campground located south of Red Lodge. The child was promptly transported to a hospital in Billings, and there was no update on her condition as of Tuesday, according to game warden Randy Hutzenbiler.
Following the attack, the campground was cleared, and authorities set traps in the vicinity. A bear suspected to be involved in the incident was captured and humanely euthanized on Monday afternoon, Hutzenbiler mentioned while noting that traps are still in place in the area. Hutzenbiler indicated that there were attractants in the area such as food and improperly secured garbage.
Wildlife officials stress the importance of storing food, garbage, and any items with a scent in bear-resistant containers or vehicles, and out of tents to avoid drawing bears near human activity.
