German prosecutors announced on Monday that a Lebanese man, identified as Fadel Z., was arrested in Salzgitter, northern Germany, for allegedly being a member of the Hezbollah militant group. He is suspected of procuring drone components for use in attacks against Israel. According to prosecutors, Fadel Z. joined Hezbollah in Lebanon in 2016 and this year began obtaining components in Germany, such as engines, to assemble military drones on the group’s orders. These drones were intended to be sent to Lebanon for potential use in attacks against Israel. Fadel Z. appeared before a judge on Monday and was ordered to remain in custody pending a potential indictment.
The ongoing conflict between Hezbollah, backed by Iran, and Israel has led to frequent exchanges of fire following the Israel-Hamas war that started nine months ago. Hezbollah has stated that it is supporting Hamas by targeting Israel. The Iranian-allied group argues that it will halt its attacks once a cease-fire is achieved in Gaza. While expressing a desire for peace, Hezbollah’s leadership has declared readiness for war.
