Ariel Atkins led the Washington Mystics to an 89-84 victory over the Indiana Fever on Wednesday, despite a strong 29-point performance by Caitlin Clark. The Mystics held a 76-55 lead going into the fourth quarter, but Clark’s 15 points in the final quarter put pressure on Washington. Clark made history by becoming the first WNBA player to record 29 points, 13 assists, five rebounds, five 3-pointers, five steals, and three blocks in a single game.
In the final minute of the game, with Indiana closing the gap to 85-82, Atkins stepped up with a clutch off-balance shot to extend Washington’s lead. A jump ball with 20.3 seconds left saw Atkins making a crucial play by grabbing the ball before securing the win with two free throws. Julie Vanloo contributed with two free throws of her own to seal the victory for the Mystics.
Stefanie Dolson and Vanloo each scored 13 points for Washington, with Aaliyah Edwards adding 12 points and Myisha Hines-Allen contributing 10 points. The Mystics played without Shakira Austin, Brittney Sykes, and Karlie Samuelson. On the Indiana side, Kelsey Mitchell scored 15 points, NaLyssa Smith added 11 points, and Lexie Hull, in her first start of the season, finished with five points in 20 minutes of play.
