Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi engaged in discussions about the conflict in Ukraine with Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer, who highlighted the importance of diplomacy following Modi’s recent meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow. The two leaders met in Austria, marking the first visit by an Indian prime minister to the country in 41 years. Nehammer emphasized the significance of understanding India’s stance on Ukraine and conveying European concerns, pointing out that India’s participation in a recent summit in Switzerland sends a strong message. He also suggested that Austria could play a role as a mediator to advance peace efforts.
During his visit to Moscow, Modi reiterated India’s neutral position regarding the Russian invasion of Ukraine. He expressed sorrow over the recent attack in which Russian missiles hit a children’s hospital in Kyiv, resulting in the deaths of numerous individuals, including children. Modi emphasized the pain caused by the loss of innocent lives, regardless of the circumstances.
Modi stated that he and Nehammer had extensive discussions on global conflicts, including the situation in Ukraine. He reiterated the necessity of solving problems through dialogue and diplomacy rather than on the battlefield, emphasizing that the loss of innocent lives is unacceptable under any circumstances. Both leaders expressed their commitment to supporting efforts aimed at restoring peace and stability in conflict-affected regions.
The Indian Prime Minister and the Austrian Chancellor did not take questions from the press following their discussions.
