Tech Employees Quit Over Musk, DOGE Task

In Washington, a significant development unfolded as over 20 civil service employees tendered their resignation from the Department of Government Efficiency, run by Elon Musk, an advisor to former President Donald Trump. The resigning employees expressed their unwillingness to utilize their technical skills to dismantle essential public services. They emphasized their dedication to serving the American people and adhering to their constitutional oath in a joint resignation letter. However, they now find it impossible to fulfill those commitments under the current administration’s direction.

The employees raised concerns about the individuals Musk enlisted to help reduce the federal government’s size, labeling them as politically ideologically-driven and lacking the required expertise for the tasks ahead. This collective resignation involves engineers, data scientists, and product managers, creating a temporary setback for Musk and the former president’s tech-focused initiative to reduce the federal workforce. This move occurs against the backdrop of numerous legal challenges aiming to hinder or undo their efforts, which have led to the dismissal or forced departure of thousands of government workers.

Karoline Leavitt, the White House press secretary, downplayed the significance of the resignations. She conveyed that protests and legal actions would not change President Trump’s commitment to ensuring a more efficient and accountable federal government.

The resigned professionals were part of the United States Digital Service, an office set up during President Barack Obama’s administration. This office aimed to address the issues that arose during the Healthcare.gov rollout, serving millions of Americans who enrolled for health insurance through the Democratic-initiated healthcare law. The individuals, previously holding senior roles at major tech companies such as Google and Amazon, joined the government out of a sense of duty.

Following Trump’s inauguration, the staffers faced intense scrutiny in interviews that predicted the kind of secretive work Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) would engage in. They reported being questioned by unnamed individuals with limited technical knowledge, guided more by their admiration for Musk than by government improvement goals. The situation posed security risks, they claimed.

Recently, the dismissal of roughly 40 staffers from the office, including key employees responsible for modernizing crucial services like Social Security and veterans’ services, impacted the government’s technological management capabilities. The resignation letter pointed out that these removals endangered the millions of Americans reliant on such services by compromising their data safety and weakening system defenses.

Among those remaining, around 65 staff members were absorbed into DOGE’s initiative to reduce government size, with about a third choosing to resign. They refuse to leverage their talents to compromise crucial government systems or legitimizing DOGE’s actions.

Elon Musk’s endeavors to streamline the government diverge from Trump’s initial campaign promises in 2024, which initially highlighted DOGE as an independent advisory commission. Post-election, Musk indicated more drastic measures, positioning himself prominently in spearheading government efficiency changes. At a recent Conservative Political Action Conference event, Musk symbolically held up a chainsaw gifted by Argentina’s President, likening it to his approach against bureaucracy.

Despite the departures, Musk aims to retain technical talent, with the lay-offs mainly affecting roles like designers, product managers, and support staff. The departure of an outspoken engineer highlighted possible political motivations behind the staff changes. The engineer believed his political leanings triggered his dismissal.

The U.S. Digital Service, initially established to assist in providing better public services and free access to government-run platforms, became involved in internal government disputes. Its strength lay in its White House backing, which empowered it to undertake initiatives for American people-centric services. Notably, ongoing tensions between government agencies and the U.S. Digital Service highlight the complexity of facilitating government change.

Amid this turmoil, Leavitt, the White House spokesperson, remains embroiled in a legal dispute over allegations of punitive actions against a news agency regarding editorial choices—a reflection of the broader challenges ensuing from the government’s restructuring initiative.
