However, do these easily accessible products genuinely alleviate flaking or could they potentially exacerbate the issue?
While dry lips can occur throughout the year, they tend to be most prevalent during the winter months.
The combination of chilly outdoor air and the dryness indoors can extract moisture from soft, delicate lips.
According to Dr. Jenna Lester, a dermatologist at UCSF Health, lip balm can play a role in retaining moisture.
“It acts as an effective barrier against external factors,” she explained, particularly highlighting its protective function against frigid winds.

So, do lip balms deliver on their promises?
For many individuals, lip balm serves as a valuable ally in combating chapped lips.
However, certain individuals may experience adverse reactions to the fragrances, flavors, and preservatives present in widely-used balms.
Instead of providing relief, these ingredients can lead to discomfort.
“Those individuals may say, ‘I’ve tried these products, anticipating relief, but my lips only seem to worsen,’” remarked Dr. Caroline Mann, a dermatologist affiliated with Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.

It’s essential to be cautious of specific ingredients, such as flavoring agents and lanolin, a waxy substance extracted from sheep that is commonly used in moisturizers.
Other components, like the preservative formaldehyde and oxybenzone, found in certain chemical-based sunscreens, can also lead to allergic reactions.
Dr. Mann explained that these reactions originate from our immune systems, which can occur at any time—regardless of how often someone uses a product—and may persist for months.

For those with sensitive lips, dermatologists often suggest opting for a fragrance-free balm that is petroleum-based, known as petrolatum on product labels, as it might be the safest option.

Alternatives for soothing chapped lips exist beyond the use of lip balm.
For instance, individuals can shield their lips with a scarf when outdoors, or utilize a humidifier indoors to combat dry indoor air.
Staying hydrated by drinking water is also essential, as dehydration can contribute to lip dryness.

One habit to steer clear of is licking your lips.
Although it may offer temporary relief, saliva evaporates quickly, taking moisture away with it and leading to even drier lips in the long run.

If reducing balm usage does not alleviate your lip issues and discomfort persists, it might be wise to consult a dermatologist for more tailored advice.
“By following these recommendations, you can navigate through the winter months with soft and supple lips,” Dr. Mann concluded.
