ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A shooting incident at a U.S. Air Force base in New Mexico occurred in the early hours of Saturday, resulting in one airman losing their life and another suffering injuries, as confirmed by military officials. They emphasized that this situation did not involve terrorism or an attack by an outsider.

According to a release from Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque, security forces were dispatched to respond to a shooting incident near one of the base’s entrances around 2 a.m. Tragically, one airman was pronounced dead at the scene, while another was transported to a local hospital with a gunshot wound to the hand, later being discharged.

In an afternoon update, officials indicated that the shooting followed an “off-base pursuit.” They assured the community that there was no ongoing threat to the public’s safety.

The Air Force has not shared extensive details about the incident, including whether any individuals are in custody, and a spokesperson refrained from confirming if the shooter or shooters were also airmen. Additionally, the names of the involved airmen have not been disclosed as of yet.

The investigation is being conducted by the Air Force Office of Special Investigations, which is overseeing all aspects of the case. FBI agents were also present at the scene and received assistance from local Albuquerque police, as stated by police spokesperson Gilbert Gallegos. He clarified that the police are not currently pursuing any suspects in connection to the shooting.
