Bill Walton’s relatives auctioning memorabilia from the late NBA legend’s career

The family of the revered Hall of Fame basketball player Bill Walton is set to auction off memorabilia that spans his illustrious career, which began in high school in San Diego and included remarkable achievements at UCLA under the legendary coach John Wooden, as well as in the NBA and his time as a sports broadcaster.

Hunt Auctions, based in Pennsylvania, announced that the auction will take place in June, with a portion of the profits designated for the orthopedic department at UC San Diego. Walton passed away from cancer last year, leaving behind a legacy that continues to resonate within the basketball community and beyond.

Among the notable items available for bidding are championship rings from Walton’s accomplishments, including the 1977 NBA championship with the Portland Trail Blazers, two NCAA championships with UCLA in 1972 and 1973, and the 1986 NBA title he secured with the Boston Celtics. Also included in the auction are his Hall of Fame induction ring and a ring commemorating his inclusion in the NBA’s 50 Greatest Players list. Fans can also expect to find game-worn jerseys and sneakers among the items up for grabs.

Additionally, the auction will pay tribute to Walton’s deep appreciation for the music of the Grateful Dead, incorporating items that reflect his favorite band.

“It has been a blessing for our family to have experienced so many invaluable moments due to Bill’s basketball journey,” shared his widow, Lori, in a statement. “In the spirit of the support that fans have shown to Bill over the years, we are excited to offer a selection of his memorabilia to that same community of devoted individuals.”

A preview of some of the items will be available for fans at Pauley Pavilion during a special event on Saturday, when the UCLA Bruins take on Ohio State.
