AUBURN, Ala. — Johni Broome recorded a double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds, helping No. 1 Auburn secure a 67-60 victory over Arkansas on Wednesday evening despite a challenging offensive outing.
After triumphing against Alabama on Saturday in a matchup of top-ranked teams, Auburn (24-2, 12-1 in the Southeastern Conference) managed to avert a second consecutive home defeat.
Chad Baker-Mazara contributed 15 points for the Tigers, while Chaney Johnson added 14. For Arkansas (15-11, 4-9), Adou Thiero was the standout with 16 points, and Johnell Davis chipped in with 14.
Both teams struggled with their long-range shooting, combining for only seven successful three-pointers out of 43 attempts.
In terms of highlights, Arkansas displayed early offensive potential but failed to sustain their momentum throughout the game. Consistent scoring has been an issue for the Razorbacks during SEC play, a trend that persisted in this contest.
On the other hand, Auburn’s performance was below its typical standards, particularly in three-point shooting, ball control, and rim protection. Although the Tigers improved as the game progressed, they have generally delivered more polished performances on their home court this season.
A pivotal moment in the game occurred when Arkansas briefly led by a point with just over three minutes remaining. In response, Auburn responded with a decisive 6-0 run that ultimately secured their victory.
A significant statistic from the game indicated that due to their less effective perimeter shooting, Auburn benefited from 16 second-chance points, derived from 13 offensive rebounds. In comparison, Arkansas had only four offensive boards, leading to just three second-chance points.
Looking ahead, Arkansas will return home on Saturday to take on No. 15 Missouri, while Auburn will host Georgia.
