A 14-year-old boy from Planalto, Brazil, has died after injecting himself with a crushed butterfly mixed with water, allegedly as part of an online challenge. Davi Nunes Moreira suffered excruciating symptoms for seven days before passing away at Vitória da Conquista general hospital last Thursday.

Symptoms worsened over time

Initially, Moreira denied any wrongdoing and told his father that he had injured himself while playing. However, as his condition deteriorated—experiencing vomiting and difficulty walking—he finally admitted the truth. His father later found a syringe hidden under his pillow.

Doctors unable to save him

Medical experts suspect that his death may have been caused by an embolism, an infection, or an allergic reaction. Toxins from the butterfly could have also played a role, potentially leading to septic shock. A full autopsy is expected to provide definitive answers.

The dangers of viral challenges

This case highlights the deadly risks associated with online dares. In April, a Brazilian influencer with two million followers nearly lost her toes after submerging her feet in ice and salt for a social media stunt. She suffered severe burns and was warned that another minute could have led to amputation.

Authorities warn against dangerous trends

Civil Police in Bahia are continuing their investigation into Moreira’s death. Meanwhile, experts urge parents to monitor their children’s online activities, as dangerous social media trends continue to put young lives at risk.
