Devers affirms his role as the Red Sox’s third baseman despite Bregman’s addition to the roster.

FORT MYERS, Fla. — The recent signing of Alex Bregman by the Red Sox has stirred up some discussion, especially after Rafael Devers made it clear that he intends to keep his position at third base. Devers, who has been with Boston and playing third since 2017, recently signed a lucrative contract himself, solidifying his role on the team.

“Third base is my position,” Devers expressed through an interpreter. “It’s what I play. I don’t know what their plans are. We had a conversation. I made it clear on what my desires were. Whatever happens from here, I don’t know.” His outright refusal to consider a transition to designated hitter was evident when he was posed the question. Devers replied instantly with a firm “No,” emphasizing his commitment to that infield spot.

Bregman’s arrival was marked by a substantial three-year contract worth $120 million, which includes a signing bonus of $5 million. Known for his consistent power hitting, Bregman has averaged more than 20 home runs per season over the last three years and is a two-time All-Star. The Red Sox see Bregman as a pivotal addition in their efforts to reverse a decline that has seen the team miss out on the playoffs in five of the past six years.

Devers, who inked an 11-year deal worth $331 million back in January 2021, has demonstrated even greater offensive production in recent seasons. Last year, he managed to hit 28 home runs and notch 83 RBIs in only 138 games due to a series of injuries, and in the prior year, he achieved 33 home runs and 100 RBIs across 153 games. Given his productivity and the considerable investment the Red Sox have made in him, Devers may hold some sway regarding his role on the team.

Manager Alex Cora highlighted Devers’ vocal stance last season on the team’s need for improvement, stating, “The decisions that are going to be made here about roster construction… we’re going to make sure we have the best team possible out there.” Cora acknowledged Devers’ pride in his position, noting that he will train as a third baseman while the organization works to finalize how best to utilize both him and Bregman.

Cora added that there remains flexibility in the team’s lineup, suggesting Bregman could play at either second or third base, with Devers also potentially playing either position or serving as the designated hitter. “There’s competition here,” Cora affirmed. “I think flexibility and versatility are huge for us.” As the team prepares for the upcoming season, the management is focused on making decisions that will ensure the overall success of the Red Sox.
