Trump participates in the Daytona 500, claiming NASCAR’s essence will drive America’s Golden Era

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — Donald Trump, present at the Daytona 500 for the second time during his presidency, described the opening race of the NASCAR season as a gathering that embodies a spirit capable of igniting “America’s Golden Age,” a vision he asserts will unfold under his guidance.

In a presidential statement issued while en route to Daytona Beach, Florida, Trump emphasized that the Daytona 500 unites individuals from diverse backgrounds through a “shared passion for speed, adrenaline, and the thrill of competition.” He noted, “From the thunderous sounds of engines on the racetrack to the stirring rendition of ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’ echoing through the stands, the Daytona 500 serves as a timeless homage to the speed, strength, and indomitable spirit that define America.” He further added, “That spirit is what will energize America’s Golden Age, and by harnessing it, the future is undoubtedly ours.”

During his inaugural address on January 20, Trump proclaimed, “The golden age of America begins right now.”

As Air Force One flew over the Daytona International Speedway prior to landing, Trump was accompanied by several guests, including his son Eric, wife Melania, and grandson Luke. In addition, he was joined by Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, his wife Kathryn, and several members of Congress according to White House disclosures. The presidential motorcade made its entrance onto a segment of the racetrack.

At the speedway, Trump’s limousine led drivers in two ceremonial laps, where he took to the radio to encourage them to enjoy the day while prioritizing safety. “This is your favorite president. I’m a big fan. I really admire you all. I can’t fathom how you accomplish what you do, but please, I just want you to be safe,” Trump remarked. “You’re talented individuals, great Americans. Enjoy the day, have fun, and I’ll see you later.”

Previously, Trump attended the Daytona 500 in 2020 while campaigning for reelection. He held the prestigious role of grand marshal for NASCAR’s largest event, where he gave the command for drivers to start their engines. The tradition of Air Force One performing a flyover also occurred during his previous appearance, as did his arrival on the speedway.

Sunday’s race commenced in front of a full crowd but faced an interruption about an hour in, after only eight laps, due to heavy rain that anticipated a significant delay. The NASCAR audience is generally perceived as leaning conservative, with many attendees sporting red “MAGA” caps supporting Trump’s “Make America Great Again” slogan. Trump himself was seen watching from a suite, donning a MAGA cap.

As a sports enthusiast, Trump departed the race earlier than initially planned during the rain delay. Known for his passion for golf, he often attends college football games and UFC events. Just last week, he made history by being the first sitting president to attend the Super Bowl.
